About

The Lindrick is a brogue derby boot manufactured by Crockett & Jones, originally produced exclusively for Ralph Lauren. The boot features wingtip brogue detailing, storm welt construction, and shell cordovan leather upper. First made on the 325 last with double leather soles, the model has been reintroduced as the "Lindrick 2" in Crockett & Jones's own collection on the 375 last with Dainite rubber soles.

The Lindrick's brogue styling allows it to transition between formal and casual contexts. The boot provides additional ankle protection while maintaining refined aesthetics suitable for pairing with wool trousers.

Design and construction

The Lindrick follows standard Goodyear welted construction, a hallmark of all Crockett & Jones footwear. The boot features a storm welt that provides enhanced water resistance through an additional layer of material folded over the join between upper and sole. This construction allows the boot to withstand rougher weather conditions compared to standard welted footwear.

The wingtip brogue pattern includes perforations along the toe cap and seams, following the traditional full brogue design. The fully lined interior provides structure and comfort. The original Ralph Lauren specification included all-eyelet lacing hardware rather than mixed eyelets and speed hooks.

The Lindrick 2 represents a significant construction departure from the original with the substitution of Dainite rubber soles for traditional leather soles. This marks one of the first instances of Crockett & Jones applying rubber soles to their shell cordovan collection, as the company historically specified single or double leather soles for cordovan styles.

Materials

The Lindrick uses shell cordovan leather from Horween Leather Co. in Chicago. Shell cordovan is an internal protective membrane that sits between the outer skin and muscle beneath, characterized by a dense fiber structure without grain. The original Lindrick featured dark brown or cigar Horween shell cordovan, while the Lindrick 2 specifically uses dark brown shell cordovan.

Horween's shell cordovan production requires approximately five months from start to finish. The process begins with vegetable tanning in solution vats for 60 days, compared to modern tanning methods completed in a single day. After tanning, the shells undergo a 90-day aging period. The leather then receives hand-currying with individual manual oiling, followed by hand staining, hung-drying, and hand-waxing. Final glazing via mechanical arm produces the leather's characteristic sheen. This traditional process has remained largely unchanged since Horween's founding in 1905 by Isadore Horween.

The partnership between Crockett & Jones and Horween dates to the mid-1980s, representing a multi-generational relationship that provides the English shoemaker with consistent access to high-quality shell cordovan. The exclusive supply arrangement enables Crockett & Jones to maintain regular stock across various shell cordovan colorways.

The original Lindrick featured double leather soles, which provided durability and could be resoled multiple times as they wore down. The thin leather mid-sole in some versions added cushioning while maintaining the traditional aesthetic. The Lindrick 2's Dainite rubber sole offers improved traction and weather resistance compared to leather, though it alters the boot's traditional profile slightly.

History

Crockett & Jones produced the original Lindrick exclusively for Ralph Lauren as part of a larger collaboration that included other shell cordovan models. The boot was made on the 325 last, a more traditional shape that Crockett & Jones has used across multiple derby and boot styles.

Ralph Lauren has historically changed their footwear lineup to reflect evolving stylistic directions, leading to the discontinuation of various Crockett & Jones collaborative models including the Lindrick. When these models became unavailable through Ralph Lauren, footwear enthusiasts organized group made-to-order projects directly with Crockett & Jones to recreate discontinued styles.

Crockett & Jones later reintroduced the design as the "Lindrick 2" within their own shell cordovan collection. The reintroduced version features the 375 last, which offers different proportions and fit characteristics compared to the original 325 last. Beyond the last change, the primary modification involved replacing the traditional double leather sole with Dainite rubber soles.

Availability

The Lindrick 2 is priced at £1,150.00 GBP and is offered in sizes 6 through 12, including half sizes. Each pair weighs 2.5 kilograms. Despite being listed in the current Crockett & Jones collection, the boot is marked as "Discontinued Shoe" in the company's system, and all size variants are currently out of stock.

The original Ralph Lauren version occasionally appears in the secondary market, though availability is limited given the model's discontinued status and the enthusiast demand for shell cordovan footwear. The rarity of shell cordovan itself contributes to limited availability, as Horween sources material from horse hindquarters with inherently constrained supply.
