The Odense is a wool-lined ankle boot manufactured by Duckfeet, a Danish footwear company known for minimalist design and natural materials. The boot combines the design of Duckfeet's unlined FÃ¥borg model with a 100% natural sheep's wool lining for additional warmth and temperature regulation. Named after Odense, Denmark's third-largest city and the birthplace of author Hans Christian Andersen, the model reflects the company's Danish heritage and commitment to simple, functional footwear.
The Odense features Terracare vegetable-tanned leather, a natural crepe rubber sole, and traditional stitchdown construction. The boot accommodates a wide toe box and flat insole design characteristic of all Duckfeet footwear, with the wool lining making it particularly suitable for cooler weather while remaining breathable for year-round wear in most climates.
The Odense utilizes stitchdown construction, one of the oldest footwear manufacturing methods in which the upper leather is curved outward and sewn directly to both the midsole and outsole. The upper is sewn twice with the outsole and insole for enhanced durability. To prevent sole splitting common with crepe rubber when sewn through to the ground, Duckfeet added an additional layer of crepe rubber as protection.
The boot's design philosophy reflects mid-20th century Danish design principles emphasizing simplicity and functionality. Duckfeet patterns have remained unchanged since the company's founding in 1975 by Inga and Claus in Skærbæk, Denmark. The minimalist, foot-formed design provides ample room for toes to move naturally and allows air circulation around the feet. The company describes its footwear as being based on ideas of simplicity and honesty, with products that do not pretend to be something they are not.
Since the 1980s, Duckfeet has produced its footwear in Poland, a country with a long shoemaking tradition. All materials originate in Europe with final production occurring at Polish factories the company has worked with consistently over decades. The resoleable construction extends the boot's potential lifespan.
The Odense upper consists of Terracare leather that undergoes vegetable tanning and receives specialized treatment for weather resistance. The interior features handcrafted 100% natural European sheep's wool lining that provides temperature regulation by keeping feet warm during cool conditions while remaining breathable as temperatures rise throughout the day.
The outsole is made from natural crepe rubber created by pouring many thin layers of natural rubber to gradually build up the sole. Small specks of leather may appear on the soles as a natural occurrence during production and packaging. While crepe rubber performs well in most weather conditions, it can soften in extreme heat or harden and lose grip in extreme cold, returning to normal performance when brought to moderate temperatures.
The boot uses thick cotton laces while the stitching and Danish flag details are made from polyester. The Odense comes packaged in a shoebox made from recycled cardboard with a handle crafted from scrap leather material. Due to its upcycled nature, the handle color may differ from the footwear color inside.
The Odense has a medium-to-wide fit with a wide toe box that allows toes to splay naturally. The boots are offered in European sizes, which are gender-neutral, ranging from size 37 to 48. The insole is flat without arch support, though it accommodates most inserts and orthotics for those requiring additional support.
Duckfeet recommends that the boots should feel snug initially, as the leather will stretch to approximately the width of a medium-weight sock and naturally mold to the wearer's feet over time. For wool-lined models like the Odense, the boots may feel particularly snug on the tops and sides at first, but this sensation diminishes as the leather relaxes and the wool packs down. Initial fitting should position the toes just touching the front end without being cramped or painful. The company suggests first trying lined models with thin socks, gradually increasing sock thickness as the boots break in if additional room is desired.
The Odense is available in multiple Terracare leather colorways including Brown, Cocoa, Bordo (burgundy), Plum (purple), Slate (gray-black), and Bio (natural). Retail pricing is approximately €249.95 in Europe, with similar pricing in the United States around $288, comparable to or slightly higher than the unlined Fåborg model. The boots are distributed through official Duckfeet retailers in North America, Europe, and Australia.
