Work Moccasin

The moc toe style draws inspiration from traditional moccasin shoes historically worn by indigenous peoples of North America. The Work Moccasin applies this heritage construction method to create a work-oriented boot with a distinctive U-shaped toe seam and roomier toe box.

The Work Moccasin employs true moccasin construction, a far more intricate process than welted or stitchdown constructions. Components including the vamp, molded sole, quarter, gusset, and toe piece are carefully cut by hand from selected leathers.

The boot is lasted from the bottom up with one piece of leather called the vamp, which forms a footbed that hugs feet on all sides and allows the foot to flex and feel the ground. This construction method requires skillful hand stitching by trained bootmakers. Workers use an awl, a sharp needle-like tool, to slice holes into the leather as it is being stitched rather than pre-punching holes. This traditional approach maintains the flexibility that moccasins were originally prized for and creates a characteristic crimped edge.

The seam on the top of the toe provides added flexibility, while the higher walls in the toe box offer more room for toes compared to conventional work boots. Many wearers find this design more comfortable after standing for extended periods.

The Work Moccasin is constructed with Horween Natural Essex leather, a full vegetable-tanned leather that uses the same natural tannins and formulas as Shell Cordovan but is applied to full cowhide instead of horse shell. Horween spent nearly three years developing Essex, which is pit-tanned over time and enriched with high oil content. The leather has no wax topcoat and is fully aniline dyed.

Essex is notably soft, pliable, and unusually supple for a vegetable-tanned leather. It has a buttery hand with mild pull-up and a slightly moist, well-conditioned feel resulting from its oil content. As a purely vegetable-tanned leather, Essex starts off light in color but gradually darkens as the leather develops patina. Depending on wear and use, the change can be dramatic over time. The leather's thickness proved sufficient to handle deep nicks from working with rebar while maintaining its structural integrity.

The tannin-rich nature of Essex means it reacts with certain chemicals. When exposed to a solution of steel wool dissolved in vinegar, which reacts with tannins in wood to create a dark aged appearance, the same reaction occurred with the leather, causing the toe area to darken significantly.

The Work Moccasin features a custom modified last that provides plenty of room in the toes with a comfortable, low heel drop. Because Essex arrives soft from the tannery, the break-in period is minimal compared to boots using stiffer leathers. The vamp construction allows the boot to conform closely to the foot's natural shape, enhancing comfort during extended wear.

The single-piece vamp design permits independent movement of the bones in the foot and toes as they were intended to move, contributing to a more natural gait and reduced fatigue. This characteristic distinguishes true moccasin construction from other boot-making methods where the foot is more constrained by multiple leather layers and structural reinforcements.

The Work Moccasin is fitted with a heavy-duty polyurethane wedge sole. The foamed structure contains tiny air bubbles, making the material lightweight, flexible, and shock-absorbing. Wedge soles distribute the wearer's weight more evenly compared to traditional lugged soles, reducing pressure points during long periods of standing or walking.

The wedge design offers important safety features for iron workers and pavers, as the smooth pattern eliminates the risk of tripping over rivets or getting a heel caught on structural parts. For workers dealing with asphalt and concrete, the wedge pattern means these materials are less likely to become stuck in grooves compared to deeply lugged sole patterns. The smooth surface also makes the sole easy to clean at the end of a work shift.
