Improving on boot making skills and techniques while working in comfort.

These are my work boots. I have worn them digging ditches, plumbing, framing, cabinet making, wiring, painting, tree trimming, and any other job that is required of a “jack of all trades”.

Amazing leather. I have done nothing to these boots except brush them once a month, and then clean and condition for final pics. The natural leather shows all the work I have done and I was prepared for them to change drastically. At one point I was darkening wood with a solution of steel wool dissolved in vinegar. This reacts with tannins in the wood to create a dark, aged appearance. It also reacts with the tannins in the leather which caused the toe area to darken significantly. The leather was also thick enough to handle some pretty deep knicks from working with rebar. Essex is soft from the tannery so break in was a non-issue.

Perfect fit from a custom modified last. Plenty of room in the toes and a comfortable, low heel drop.

Boot making is a hobby, so there is plenty of room for improvement. I experimented with different techniques and materials and most worked, while some did not. I mainly need to figure out a better process for attaching and finishing the sole, but I have a grasp on what needs to be done. The overall quality is getting there but far from perfect. Having said that, they met my needs and looked great doing so.

Great sole. Surprisingly durable even though it feels softer than a Vibram wedge. I am a big guy and can be hard in soles but these are still going strong. Very comfortable on hard surfaces and great traction in most conditions.
