Haas Black Utah

Leather Color

About

Haas Black Utah is a black color variant of Haas Utah, an embossed grain calf leather produced by Tanneries Haas in Alsace, France. The leather maintains all the characteristic properties of Utah leather, including its soft, supple texture and distinctive hatchgrain pattern, while being through-dyed in black for consistent color throughout the material. Black Utah undergoes the same specialized double-tanning process that distinguishes the Utah leather line, combining chrome tanning with vegetable re-tanning using a proprietary blend of chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho extracts.

Edward Green uses black Utah extensively across their casual and country boot collection, offering the leather in models including the Camden ankle boot, Kentmere field boot, Cranleigh derby boot, and their iconic Galway boot. The black color variant is positioned as a premium leather option for footwear with a soft natural finish rather than high shine, making it particularly suitable for country and casual wear applications where the embossed grain texture complements rugged sole options like Dainite and Ridgeway rubber.

Manufacturing process

Black Utah leather production follows the standard Haas Utah manufacturing process established by Tanneries Haas. The leather begins with A-grade European calf skins selected for the tightness of their grain structure. Only skins meeting the stringent quality standards required for Utah production advance to the tanning process, with less than 30 percent of incoming hides qualifying.

The double-tanning process first chrome tans the skins, then vegetable re-tans them using a proprietary blend of chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho extracts. This combination produces leather that maintains the durability of chrome tanning while gaining the natural aging characteristics associated with vegetable tanning. The black color variant is through-dyed during the tanning process, ensuring consistent black color penetration throughout the leather thickness rather than surface coloring alone.

Following tanning and dyeing, the leather is hot stuffed with a mixture of greases that nourish the material and contribute to the signature suppleness of Utah leather. The characteristic hatchgrain pattern is then embossed onto the surface, creating the distinctive textured appearance that identifies black Utah leather. The embossing process applies consistent texture across the surface while maintaining the full-grain structure beneath.

Physical characteristics

Black Utah leather exhibits the soft and supple texture that distinguishes the Utah leather line from firmer leather types. The embossed hatchgrain pattern creates visible texture across the black surface, providing both visual interest and practical benefits. The through-dye process ensures that the black color remains consistent if the surface is scratched or scuffed, rather than revealing lighter leather beneath.

The leather's texture and tanning process make it particularly suitable for applications requiring flexibility and comfort. The double-tanning process, combined with hot stuffing, produces material that requires minimal break-in time compared to heavily structured leathers. The full-grain nature of the leather, preserved beneath the embossed pattern, allows the material to develop character through use.

Black Utah develops patina through use and exposure, though the visible changes differ from lighter Utah colors. The natural finish allows the leather to absorb oils and wear patterns, creating subtle variations in the black surface over time. High-wear areas develop more pronounced texture and may show slight lightening where the embossed pattern experiences repeated flexing.

Applications

Black Utah leather is primarily used in casual and country footwear applications where its soft texture and natural finish provide advantages over more structured alternatives. The black color combined with the embossed grain texture creates a versatile option that works for both casual everyday wear and country applications requiring durable rubber soles.

Edward Green offers black Utah across multiple boot models in their collection. The Camden ankle boot features black Utah with slim rubber soles on the 82 last, providing a modern silhouette for casual wear. The Kentmere field boot uses black Utah with Ridgeway soles on the rugged 72 last, positioned for country applications. The Cranleigh derby boot combines black Utah with Dainite soles on the classic 202 last, featuring a hand-sewn Norwegian apron and storm welt construction.

The iconic Galway boot is available in black Utah paired with black delapré, mounted on the 82 last with Dainite soles. This configuration represents a premium made-to-order option, with Edward Green offering black Utah as a leather choice for both shaft and foot construction. The black Utah Galway maintains the distinctive curved arrowhead detail that identifies the model while providing the casual aesthetic and natural finish characteristic of Utah leather.

The leather's embossed grain pattern and natural finish make it less suitable for highly polished formal footwear, where smooth black calf leather better serves aesthetic requirements. Black Utah's strength lies in applications where textured grain, character development, and casual appearance align with design intentions.
