About

The Valor is a full brogue wingtip boot made by Junkard Company, an Indonesian heritage footwear manufacturer based in Bandung. The boot features a pointed toe cap with decorative wing extensions and comprehensive brogue detailing, designed to combine elegant styling with rugged construction suitable for heritage footwear enthusiasts.

The Valor is built using Goodyear handwelted construction with a 360-degree stormwelt, offering both durability and water resistance. The boot is offered as made-to-order with an eight-week production timeline, allowing customers to customize various specifications including leather choices, sole options, and construction details.

Design and construction

The Valor follows traditional full brogue design principles, featuring a pointed toe cap with wing-shaped extensions that run along both sides of the toe, terminating near the ball of the foot. The toe cap incorporates both perforation and serration along its edges, with additional decorative perforations forming a medallion pattern in the center of the toe cap. This brogue detailing extends around the quarter area of the boot.

The boot uses Goodyear handwelted construction, a traditional method that attaches the upper to the sole through a welt strip. The 360-degree stormwelt provides comprehensive water resistance around the entire boot perimeter. The construction includes a single-layer midsole beneath a Dainite studded rubber outsole and heel, with natural-finished edge trim.

Standard specifications include Italian shell cordovan leather uppers in cognac, though the made-to-order program allows customers to select from various leather options including full-grain leathers and pull-up styles. The interior features lambskin leather lining. The boot incorporates antique brass hardware, including eyelets and two speedhooks for the upper shaft.

Last and fit

The Valor is constructed on Junkard Company's MLD last, which shares overall characteristics with the company's SC last but features a lower toe box profile. This lower profile pairs particularly well with the wingtip design. The MLD last accommodates wide feet and is available in E to EEE width options.

The company offers the MLD last across multiple models including the Valor, Double Monk Strap, LW112, and DW112. Customers can provide ball width measurements during the ordering process to ensure optimal fit. The company's made-to-order system includes sizing assistance through email consultation.

Made-to-order program

The Valor is produced exclusively through Junkard Company's made-to-order program, with an estimated production time of eight weeks on business days. Customers can customize various aspects of the boot including last selection, leather choices, sole options, and construction details.

The made-to-order program allows selection from the company's range of leathers, including locally sourced options starting at $235, imported leathers at $300, and shell cordovan versions at $495. All prices include shipping to the United States. The company established its reputation partly through offering shell cordovan boots at competitive prices compared to international alternatives.

Historical context

The brogue detailing featured on the Valor originates from Scottish footwear traditions. The perforations that characterize brogue designs originally served a functional purpose, allowing water to drain from boots when crossing wet terrain. Over time, these functional perforations evolved into purely decorative elements used to create elegant styling on dress boots and shoes.

Junkard Company was founded in late 2010 by Tangguh and Hamzah in Bandung, Indonesia, during a period when few local brands focused on traditional leather footwear manufacturing. The company's emergence reflects Indonesia's deeper shoemaking heritage, which traces to the 19th century when Dutch colonization brought European shoemaking techniques to the archipelago. After Dutch departure following World War II, the shoemaking industry remained concentrated in Bandung within West Java province.
