Incas Natural Kangaroo is a color variant of harness leather made from kangaroo hide. The leather combines the natural light tan color of undyed kangaroo leather with harness leather finishing, creating a material that maintains the hide's inherent tones while providing the durability characteristics of harness leather.
The leather originates as light tan when received from the tannery but darkens with exposure to sunlight. This natural color approach allows maximum patina development as the leather evolves through handling and environmental exposure.
Kangaroo leather exhibits exceptional strength-to-weight properties, with vegetable tan kangaroo having about four times the tensile strength of equivalent cowhide. The superior performance comes from the tight and dense fiber structure of the kangaroo skin and the multidirectional orientation of the fibers. When kangaroo lace is pulled, it retains its rectangular cross section when stretched, whereas cowhide lace will curl.
The natural color presents as a light tan in its initial state and darkens over time with sunlight exposure. Each hide displays distinctive natural markings and textures that create unique character in finished products. The leather maintains a soft feel and fine grain finish despite being described as "the strongest leather for its weight in the world."
For applications requiring abrasion resistance combined with tear strength, kangaroo outperforms alternative leathers significantly, making it suitable for demanding uses while maintaining a relatively thin profile.
Natural kangaroo leather undergoes high strength bark tannage with drum stuffing, a process where grease is mechanically worked into the material for even distribution and optimal performance characteristics. The finished leather typically measures approximately 1.0 to 1.1 millimeters thick.
The material is sourced from excess kangaroo populations harvested in Australia under programs approved by U.S. Fish and Wildlife authorities. All sourcing follows the national code of practice for the humane treatment of kangaroos, with hides coming from open range environments.
