The Spalla Derby Boot is a derby boot style produced by Midas Bootmaker, an Indonesian workshop specializing in handmade workwear boots. The model features a peaked backstay and faux-stitching across the heel counter, distinguishing it from traditional derby boot designs.
Midas produces the Spalla using traditional hand-welted construction methods, with all components built by hand in their Bandung, Indonesia workshop. The boot is available through made-to-order production with a lead time of approximately four to six months.
The Spalla Derby Boot presents a different interpretation of the classic derby boot style. The design incorporates a peaked backstay and faux-stitching across the heel counter, creating visual distinction from traditional derby patterns. These design elements contribute to the boot's workwear aesthetic while maintaining the fundamental derby construction.
The Spalla features handwelted construction throughout. Midas builds each boot entirely by hand, with uppers lasted by hand and welts sewn by hand rather than using Goodyear welting machines. The construction includes a thick full vegetable-tanned leather insole and a full vegetable-tanned leather heel stack.
The outsole is fully handstitched, with each sole seam sewn by hand despite the use of rubber soles. The bottom filling consists of a cork plate in the front portion, while the waist incorporates a metal shank covered with the same vegetable-tanned leather as the insole. The heel is built up layer by layer and pegged by hand from both the bottom and the inside of the shoe, contrasting with factory-made welted shoes that use pre-built heels attached in one piece by machine.
All construction methods offered by Midas are completely handwelted and handsewn to maximize durability and stitch strength. The welt serves as the backbone of the shoe, holding the insole together with the upper leather.
The Spalla Derby Boot is available in various premium leathers carefully curated from tanneries worldwide. Leather options include Cognac Badalassi Carlo Minerva, Indigo vegetable-tanned leather, and Shinki teacore horse front. These materials are selected to provide high-functioning options that age elegantly with wear.
Midas sources rugged leathers both locally in Indonesia and from renowned international tanneries. The leather selection reflects the brand's focus on materials suited for workwear applications while maintaining quality standards from established tanneries.
The Spalla Derby Boot is produced on a made-to-order basis through House of Agin, which serves as Midas's MTO agent. The total base price is $340 USD shipped, with a 50% deposit of $190.00 USD required to begin production. The remaining 50% is due upon completion. Sizes over 45 incur additional charges.
Lead time for made-to-order pairs is approximately four to six months. Midas products are shipped directly from the maker to the customer and are not handled by House of Agin. The extended lead time reflects Midas/Winson's small-scale production, operating as a workshop of eight people producing no more than approximately 30 pairs of shoes per month.
