Maker
Midas Bootmaker was founded by Emil Rahmana Putra in 2014 as Winson Shoemaker, initially operating from a garage before establishing a proper workshop with employees in 2017. In 2021, the operation separated into two distinct brands: Winson for dress shoes and Midas Bootmaker for workwear boots. The small workshop employs eight people and produces approximately 30 pairs of boots monthly.
Construction
All Midas boots, including the Thunderboot II, feature completely handwelted and handsewn construction. The uppers are hand-lasted, pulled over the last manually rather than using machines. Sole seams are hand-stitched even when using rubber soles, and heels are constructed layer by layer by hand.
The boots use leather toe and heel stiffeners made from vegetable tanned shoulder leather rather than synthetic alternatives. Insoles are constructed from thick vegetable tanned shoulder leather with hand-carved holdfast channels. Cork plate bottom filling is used in the front part of the boot instead of cheaper cork mass, and a metal shank at the waist is covered with vegetable tanned leather. Heels are pegged by hand from both the bottom and inside for secure attachment.
Midas offers several construction methods including Norwegian welt, Veldtschoen, Flatwelt, and Stairschoen.
Pricing
The Thunderboot II required a 50% deposit of $190 USD when ordered through House of Agin. General Midas pricing ranges from $340 and up for boots with local leather, $490 and up for imported leather, and $490 and up for horsebutt leather. A collaboration with Skolyx in 2021 produced boots priced at €500 ($466 excluding VAT).
