Conceria Puccini Attilio is an Italian tannery specializing in vegetable-tanned bovine leather. Founded in 1986 by Attilio Puccini in Ponte a Egola, Tuscany, the company produces hand-finished leathers for luggage, bags, leather goods, footwear, belts, and furniture. The tannery is a founding member of The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium.
Located in the Tuscan Leather District between Florence and Pisa, the family-operated business is currently managed by Attilio's son Marco Puccini and daughter Sandra. The tannery maintains traditional vegetable tanning methods using natural tannins from chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho trees.
Attilio Puccini began working in tanneries in Ponte a Egola at age 14 during the post-war era, gaining experience in processing bovine vegetable-tanned leather for leather goods and footwear. After this apprenticeship period, he established Conceria Puccini Attilio in 1986.
As a founding member of The Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium established in 1994, the tannery contributed to the organization that now includes 18 associated tanneries operating in Tuscany. The consortium safeguards traditional vegetable tanning methods and certifies production through its quality trademark. Attilio passed down the values of the craft to his children, Marco and Sandra, who now manage the family business.
Conceria Puccini Attilio produces shoulders, fronts, butts, sides, and calves in over 60 colors and various thicknesses. The company's product range serves multiple sectors including luggage manufacturing, bag making, leather goods production, footwear construction, belt fabrication, and furniture upholstery.
The tannery's selection includes hand-wiped leathers, layered and transparent leathers, glossy leathers following current trends, bronzed leathers with faded and aged effects, and soft natural greasy leathers that emphasize the natural grain.
Koala is one of the oldest articles produced by the tannery. Made from French cow shoulders of the highest quality, this 100 percent vegetable-tanned leather features a smooth, full-grain surface with firm temper. The fattening process uses Sego according to the tannery's traditional recipe, combined with other natural oils to provide elasticity and richness to the leather. Tanning with natural tannin extracts from Quebracho and Chestnut trees gives the leather its firm structure and elasticity. Koala develops a rich patina over time with use.
Maremma is a 100 percent vegetable-tanned leather made in Tuscany from full-grain double shoulder hides. The leather features firm temper and smooth grain finish.
Inspired by Ancient Byzantine Art, Bisanzio combines vegetable-tanned leather with artistic processing methods. The leather undergoes drum dyeing, fattening with natural oils, and finishing with aniline colors. The bright and shiny appearance features unique colors that change depending on lighting conditions. While stiff, the leather remains soft enough for leather goods products and has a smooth, pleasant hand feel.
The tannery sources raw hides from France, Sweden, and Switzerland. For the Koala leather specifically, the company uses cow shoulders of the highest quality from France. Raw materials are preserved only with coarse salt.
The vegetable tanning process uses natural tannins extracted from chestnut, mimosa, and quebracho trees. Processing takes place in wooden drums with pure water. The tannery employs custom fatliquor recipes and manual finishing techniques including polishing with felt and amber stone. Slow drying methods are used to complete the process.
The tanning approach emphasizes sustainability and environmental respect, transforming raw materials through respect for materials and artisan tradition rather than aggressive chemical processes. Products feature minimal surface pigment correction to preserve natural characteristics such as growth marks and veins.
