Ive worn my newly resoled 1907s nearly every day while they protected my feet from salt, baby vomit, and the elements. I got my Red Wing 1907s resoled by Steve at Bedo’s Leatherworks (new welt, midsole, and outsole) in July 2025. Steve did an absolutely FANTASTIC job. He really breathed new life into them. July was also the same month my daughter was born. After i got my boots back from Steve, I tested them out for a bit and put them on the shelf, since I was going to be staying in the house helping the wife raise our newborn. I wasn’t planning on Doming this year, but the pre-worn category was announced a few months later, and I knew my boots were the perfect “fit” for the category. I wore these for EVERYTHING. Most notably, at the Honolulu Marathon’s 10k portion where wife and I speed-walked our baby in her stroller through downtown honolulu. These boots helped keep my dogs from barking during the 10k and our trip to Japan, and they kept my feet dry while chopping through armored snow (what happened on the East Coast was weird). They’re surprisingly great beach boots, handling sand sprays with ease. Aside from those adventures, I’d wear them every day to work at my office job, gardening, moving furniture, family handy-man house calls, and hikes at the national and state parks.
The leather has changed immensely through the months. After a full resole and good cleaning, these boots were ready for a whole new life. The pull-up of the Copper Rough & Tough leather really shines here and showcases a contrast that I absolutely love. I wore them during the hot and muggy winter months in hawaii where they somehow managed to keep my feet dry and still not terribly hot during the 10k. For the winter months, I slapped on some thicker wool socks and they are good to go. My care-routine was generally brush everyday and wipe off any mess with a damp cloth. Then the winter snow hit the DC area where I’m at, and thus, covered my boots in salt. I was able to get the salt out with the help of some vinegar diluted with water without stripping the patina too much. I really adored the color change of these boots over the month and I hope others do too!
Boot fit as good as it has ever been, which is why I’ve worn them for years already. My only complaint is the instep was a little high where the panels were showing signs of touching each other when lacing. Fortunately, insoles like the arch ease from Nicks and/or some thick socks really helped fill in the volume.
Craftsmanship is as consistent as always with Red Wing. Everything held up through all the abuse I put them through. An ice skater even stepped on them, but luckily that was all on the welt. I ended up picking up my second pair of red wings during my trip in japan!
The Vibram Christy soles are comfy and look decent enough, but as you can see in the picture, they are already in need of a resole before I break my neck on a small puddle. Not sure if I’ll get another Christy or change them to a harder lug sole next.
The 1907 is my favorite boot. It’s nothing crazy, but it excels in its tried and true consistency and craftsmanship. The “pre-worn” category of this competition really helped me appreciate what I already have. I avoided going down a rabbit hole of purchases that I may have been guilty of in the past. Rather than asking myself “what new thing can I get?” I instead ask “what new thing can I do?”. Thanks for everyone that helped make this happen! I hope this category is here to stay.
