The Boondocker is a military-inspired boot manufactured by Sagara, an Indonesian bootmaker based in Bandung, West Java. Introduced as part of Sagara's heritage footwear collection, the Boondocker reinterprets the classic U.S. Navy N-1 Field Shoes worn during World War II, combining traditional construction methods with Italian horse rump leather and handwelted construction.
Sagara produces the Boondocker using 270° handwelted flat welt construction on the Mark Last with an unstructured design. The boot features Cloe Horserump leather in brown roughout finish and is built on #1122 Raw Cord full soles, with custom configuration options available for made-to-order specifications.
The Sagara Boondocker employs 270° handwelted flat welt construction, a traditional method that combines handwelting techniques with the durability of Goodyear construction. The boot is built on Sagara's Mark Last with an unstructured design, meaning it lacks toe reinforcement for a softer, more comfortable fit.
The upper utilizes Cloe Horserump leather in brown roughout finish, where the reverse side of Italian horse rump leather is treated with brown dye sprayed on the flesh side. This creates a distinctive texture with natural color variations peeking through the hairy nap. The construction is completed with #1122 Raw Cord full soles.
The boondocker style derives its name from the Tagalog word "bundok," meaning mountain, and became the nickname for U.S. Navy N-1 Field Shoes during World War II. These boots served as standard issue footwear throughout the Pacific Theater, designed specifically for humid and rugged environments.
Original WWII boondockers featured roughout leather uppers with suede-like exterior and corded soles made from repurposed car tires and nylon as part of wartime material conservation efforts. The design underwent simplification in 1944 when toe caps and rivets were removed. The style continued in military use beyond World War II, including during the Korean War, eventually transitioning from military gear to heritage fashion.
