Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin, and Joseph Cordeau founded Sebago-Moc in 1946. The company’s name was taken from Lake Sebago, located near the company’s original base in Maine.
Sebago introduced its first product, a hand-sewn penny loafer, in 1946. This shoe remains part of the company’s product line.
By 1950, Sebago-Moc’s annual revenue reached $1 million. In 1952, daily production increased to 2,000 pairs, which led to the construction of a new manufacturing plant.
The company entered the women’s shoe market in 1963. In 1965, Sebago started exporting products to Europe through a partnership with Francisco Gaudier.
Sebago released the Docksides boat shoe design in 1970. This marked the introduction of one of its most recognized footwear models.
