Seidel Aged Bark Chieftain Roughout is a color variant of Seidel Chieftain Roughout leather, featuring a deep rich orange-brown color with distinctive nap texture. The leather is saturated with oils in the drum and finished with additional oils and waxes, creating the characteristic Aged Bark coloration. The flesh-out finish displays a suede-like nap that contains considerably more texture than standard suede and chamois roughout leathers. Out of the box, much of the nap remains dormant, but it emerges naturally through wear, becoming particularly noticeable on heel areas as the boots develop a distinctive patina over time.
The leather combines the core characteristics of Chieftain Roughout with the unique Aged Bark color treatment. It maintains the light weight, flexibility, high durability, and water resistance of the base leather while displaying the rich orange-brown coloration that develops into unique wear patterns. The oil-tanned construction provides distinctive pull-up characteristics where the leather lightens when flexed or bent, revealing depth and color variations throughout the material.
Aged Bark Chieftain Roughout is produced using the same chrome tannage methods as the standard Chieftain Roughout base, starting with full grain cow hides processed at Seidel Tanning Corporation's Milwaukee facility. The leather is saturated with oils during the drum tanning process and then finished with additional oils and waxes to achieve the deep orange-brown color characteristic of the Aged Bark variant.
The production process involves dyeing with rich pigments throughout the hide for deep and lasting color. The finishing treatment produces the flesh-out surface with its distinctive suede-like nap, which contains considerably more texture than standard roughout leathers. The dormant nap structure emerges gradually through wear, creating the leather's characteristic aging pattern.
The Aged Bark colorway features a deep rich orange-brown tone with significant nap texture. The leather displays the full range of oil-tanned characteristics, including high durability, water resistance, and distinctive pull-up effects. The flesh-out finish showcases tonal variations and natural characteristics inherent to the leather construction.
The nap structure distinguishes Aged Bark from other roughout variants. While much of the nap remains dormant when new, it emerges naturally through wear and movement, particularly in high-flex areas. Heel sections show the most noticeable nap development as the boots age. The flesh-out finish develops a distinctive patina that reflects individual wear patterns, with the oil-tanned construction allowing the leather to show noticeable scuffs and creases that add character over time.
Aged Bark Chieftain Roughout appears primarily in heritage footwear construction. Oak Street Bootmakers features the leather prominently in multiple models, including the Field Boot, Trench Oxford, Trench Chukka, Lakeshore Boot, and Cap-Toe Field Boot. Viberg also produces boots using this leather color variant.
