Beige Pony latigo horsehide is extra heavyweight, full-grain, and vegetable tanned.[2] The tanning process involves natural air drying and aging stages that take up to four months at Shinki Hikaku's facility in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.[2][3] This extended process produces a unique texture and grain pattern distinct to Shinki's horsehide production.[2][3]

The leather is characterized by light weight and suppleness despite its heavyweight construction.[5] Horsehide processed through Shinki's tannin-tanning method becomes increasingly glossy and vintage-looking with age.[5] The dense grain structure provides added durability and resistance while maintaining a less waxy feeling compared to other horsehide types.[6]

Latigo horsehide displays notable patina development through wear. The leather shows beautiful creasing patterns and darkening in areas exposed to general wear and sun exposure.[6] The tannin-tanned finish allows the natural characteristics of the horsehide to emerge over time, with the glossy surface developing increased depth and vintage appearance with extended use.[5]

Viberg waited a year to secure an allotment of latigo horsehide from Shinki Hikaku due to the difficulty in procuring heavyweight horsehides.[2] The leather is typically used for belts and straps due to its low flexibility, making its application in footwear a specialized use case.[2] Shinki Hikaku, established in 1951, is the only tannery globally to specialize exclusively in horse leather.[2][3]

As part of Viberg's limited release collection, Beige Pony latigo horsehide is produced in small batches without restocking.[1] This approach reflects Viberg's emphasis on showcasing craftsmanship through limited-edition special makeups using highly coveted and unique leathers.

Viberg offers Service Boots in Beige Pony latigo horsehide on both the 2030 and 2040 lasts.[1] The boots feature brogue cap toe construction with nine antique brass eyelets.[1] Construction uses stitchdown method with a Dainite studded sole, leather toe puff, full lining, and natural midsole.[1][2]
