The Brunnkogel is a traditional Austrian hiking boot manufactured by Steinkogler Bergschuh for mid-to-high alpine terrain. The boot features Norwegian welt construction, full-grain cowhide upper, and a calfskin leather lining, combining traditional bootmaking techniques with modern materials. Named after a mountain peak in Austria's Höllengebirge range, the Brunnkogel represents Steinkogler's heritage of producing mountain footwear since 1700.
The boot is classified as hardness A/B, softer than traditional mountaineering boots while maintaining all-leather construction suitable for alpine conditions. Each pair is made to order at Steinkogler's workshop in Ebensee am Traunsee, Upper Austria, with delivery times ranging from four days to six weeks depending on manufacturing status.
The Brunnkogel uses double-stitched construction, known as zwiegenäht or Norwegian welt, with braided polyester thread that is waxed on the outside. This hand-stitched technique extends product lifespan and enables repairs, following traditional methods used by Steinkogler for over three centuries. The construction method allows the boot to be resoled, contributing to its durability and long-term value.
The upper is made from full-grain cowhide leather that has been turned, providing both durability and water resistance. The interior features a soft, fine-pored calfskin leather lining at 1.5mm thickness, offering comfort against the foot. Rather than a traditional leather midsole, the boot incorporates a tensioning insole with EVA foam cushioning underneath, topped with a Vibram 132 Montagna Lug Unit Sole for traction on varied terrain.
The sole assembly includes both leather and rubber midsole components with a mountain profile rubber outsole. This combination provides the stability needed for alpine use while maintaining some flexibility for comfort during extended wear.
The Brunnkogel weighs 1,100 grams per boot with a height of approximately 22 centimeters. The boot incorporates a waterproof tongue, also called a gusseted tongue or Wasserlasche in German, which prevents water and debris from entering through the lacing area. The footbed is removable and interchangeable, allowing users to customize fit and support.
The deep-pull lacing system, or Tiefzugschnürung, provides adjustable tension from the toe to the top of the boot. Padding extends to ankle height, with a raised boot collar designed to protect against debris such as scree or pine needles. The boot is conditionally crampon compatible, suitable for use with certain types of crampons in alpine conditions.
The boot is classified for mid-to-high alpine terrain use (Mittel-Hochgebirge in German), with a natural color finish. The article number is 3717.
The Brunnkogel is available in standard sizes ranging from EU 40⅔ to 47⅓ (UK 7 to 12). Larger sizes from 12.5 to 13.5 are available with a 25 percent upcharge, while size 14 and above require a price quote. As of December 2025, the retail price is €395.00.
Each pair is made to order directly at the manufacturer's facility in Ebensee am Traunsee. Delivery time varies from four days to six weeks depending on the manufacturing queue and material availability. The boots require maintenance with wax-based leather treatment to preserve the leather and maintain water resistance.
