Whisky is a warm brown color option of horsebutt leather produced by Conceria Cloe, an Italian tannery located in Ponte a Égola, Toscana. The leather features mahogany tones created through vegetable tanning methods specialized for horse leather products.
The whisky designation refers to the leather's rich brown coloration similar to aged whisky, though the tannery also uses "mahogany" to describe this finish. Conceria Cloe produces this horsebutt leather with no pigmentation applied, allowing the natural grain and color characteristics to develop through the tanning process.
Whisky horsebutt maintains the core physical properties of Conceria Cloe's horse leather while displaying its distinctive warm brown coloration. The leather features subtle grain variation with a dry, matte touch and very soft temper despite being highly durable with dense fibers. The material is riddled with grain irregularities which characterize its aesthetic, creating an imperfect, natural appearance that appeals to heritage footwear enthusiasts.
The reverse flesh side exhibits traces of shell cordovan bleeding through the fibers, adding to the leather's complex visual character. This composition includes all three layers of the horse's butt: grain, shell, and flesh.
The whisky finish develops medium patina that creates a lustrous, almost metallic shine over time. High oil content contributes to the leather's patina susceptibility, making it particularly responsive to wear and conditioning. The leather develops distinctive character through regular use.
Heritage bootmakers use whisky horsebutt for premium boot construction. Indonesian bootmaker Sagara offers multiple models using Conceria Cloe's mahogany/whisky horsebutt, including the Imperial IV, Valiant, and Bandung Derby styles. Meermin produces Norvegese Service Boots using this leather. The material is also applied to boot kilties, belts, and other leather accessories where its distinctive color and aging properties are valued.
