The Journey Derby Boot is a dress boot model made by Midas Bootmaker, featuring eight eyelets and fewer rows of stitching than the company's Service Boot. Priced at $340 for local leather options, the Journey Derby represents the dressier end of Midas's workwear-oriented product line while maintaining the same handmade construction standards as the company's other models.
The boot is available through House of Agin, Midas's made-to-order agent, with a lead time of approximately four to six months. The Journey Derby can be customized with various leather options, construction methods, and hardware configurations.
The Journey Derby Boot features eight eyelets in its lacing system, distinguishing it from Midas's more casual Service Boot design. The boot offers optional toe cap and heel counters, allowing customers to customize the level of structure and protection. The design emphasizes a dressier aesthetic compared to other Midas models while retaining the rugged construction characteristic of the brand.
The boot is available on four different lasts: Edlyn, Marlyn, Landshaker, and Stark. All lasts fit European true to size. The Marlyn last has been documented in customer builds featuring Horween Unglazed Natural Shell Cordovan.
The Journey Derby Boot employs fully handwelted construction throughout. Unlike factory-made welted boots that use lasting machines and Goodyear welting machines, every step of the Midas construction process is completed by hand using traditional tools including awls, needles, knives, and hammers.
The boot features a thick full vegetable-tanned leather insole and a full vegetable-tanned leather heel stack. The sole seam attaching the welt to the outsole is sewn by hand, even when rubber outsoles are specified. The bottom filling consists of a cork plate in the front portion rather than cheaper cork mass, with a metal shank at the waist covered in vegetable-tanned leather.
The heel is built layer by layer and pegged by hand from both the bottom and inside of the shoe, contrasting with factory-made welted shoes that use pre-built heels attached in one piece by machine. Midas uses real leather toe and heel stiffeners in their construction.
Midas offers several welting techniques for the Journey Derby Boot. The Flat Welt provides a streamlined profile suitable for dressier applications. The Norwegian (Storm) Welt adds water resistance with its outward-facing seam. The Veldtschoen construction features a reverse welt for additional weather protection.
The Stairschoen represents Midas's signature construction method, creating a three-dimensional staircase effect at the welt junction. All construction methods can be executed in either 270-degree or 360-degree configurations.
The Journey Derby Boot sources leather from both Indonesian tanneries and international suppliers. Local Indonesian leathers include black, dark brown, burgundy, and tan pullup leathers, along with indigo-dyed vegetable-tanned leather, tan roughout, and tobacco floater.
International leather options include Badalassi Carlo Minerva from Italy, Horween Chromexcel from the United States, and Shinki leather from Japan. Maryam Toscanello horsebutt is available, and shell cordovan can be sourced upon request. Specific documented builds include Horween Unglazed Natural Shell Cordovan with features such as five brass eyelets, four brass speed hooks, leather laces, a leather midsole, toe plates, 160-degree folded upper, and 360-degree sole stitching.
Multiple outsole configurations are available for the Journey Derby Boot. Vibram options include the Eton, Londra, and 430 mini commando patterns. Dr Sole half rubber provides an alternative rubber sole option. Double leather outsoles offer a traditional aesthetic with the fully handstitched sole seam characteristic of Midas construction.
The base price for the Journey Derby Boot starts at $340 for local Indonesian leather options. Sizes exceeding European size 45 incur additional charges.
