Why I own this

Ready To Wear
Style

In the men's footwear scene there has been a massive hole for the past 30ish years left by the Florsheim Imperial gunboats. These shoes had promise to fill that hole

How I sized

This was my first go at a pair of GS. Sizing was based on availability of a good deal tbh

Care Routine

The leather looks basically new after 3 years. I've used shoe cream (mostly pure polish). Brushed when dirty. Conditioned when dry.

Durability

Everything about the longwing is great. Unfortunately, the midsole+outsole were more stiff than any other double soled boot/shoe I've owned.

Sole & heel

Comfort

Unfortunately--a common theme with grant stone--this is the worst part of the shoe and what stops it from comparing favorably to a Florsheim. It is so extremely stiff. I immediately put toe plates on the shoe. I then wore all the way through the brass toe plates. In three years the sole never really felt *broken in*

It's okay. Ironically, now the shoe feels too flexible and light--especially for a gunboat

Final thoughts

Good Value
Would Recommend

The best gunboats are Florsheim Imperials, AE Macniels, and Alden. Only Alden still makes the same model. Modern brands are giving their takes. These don't hold a candle to vintage AE or vintage Florsheim. But they have the aesthetic and are approachable in price (vs Alden). If you're not gonna pony up for Alden, or search for vintage, these are fine. If you can get blkbrd to make a pair in your size, they're probably just as good. Carmina's on the Detroit last looks good. So, do I recommend them? Yeah, ish.

Grant Stone Cap Toe Boot in Horween Crimson Chromexcel
By _cryptid_jack • April 1, 2024"I started my first two months wearing them every day straight with only Sundays being the day they weren’t worn, as it was a day off work where I didn’t have any plans to leave the house. My job is retail, suit shop, carpet and concrete, lots of stretching and bending and moving carts and racks of clothes around. I’d say it’s a fairly active environment, I don’t sit often, in fact often I’m speed walking all day haha! I’ve also worn them on dates with my wife! I’d say the average wardrobe they’re paired with would be smart chinos, shirt and tie, and tweed blazer, but occasionally shined and conditioned to be worn with a navy suit. I often don’t think about trying to keep my shoes clean or clear from debris so scuffs and scrapes happen regularly. After that first two month period the rubber delaminated at the toes which caught me off guard but otherwise everything about the shoes has held up tremendously. Although, whether it’s my lifestyle or perhaps a touch of rough metal in an eyelet, I’ve gone through shoelaces like mad and am on my 4th pair. I wore them in blizzard white out conditions, heavy rain, and long hours in the sunlight, as well as inside at my job under the fluorescent bulbs. All in all these are now the boots my work colleagues associate with me, and I know they’re gonna be a part of my life for a very long time!..."Read the full review
