I love chukkas because you can so easily dress them up or down. They were right at home if I was strolling around Chinatown or hiking through our local state park. I wore these to take a friend from Mexico City sledding for the first time, planting trees on a snowy late fall day in the park next door, and just putzing around town. I put several miles on them in one day walking from one end of the Pennsylvania Farm Show to the other, then back, and back again. They came with me to the movies, to doctors office, and the grocery store. I work from home, so I relish each chance I had to take these chukkas out into the world.
I called these my chukkamoles on account of the color. And like actual guacamole, they avocado green settled into a (much nicer) green-brown with age. In fact, depending on the lighting, they read as either deep olive or a light chocolate brown. The leather has a beautiful finish. After all my wear and tear, it has kept a beautiful high gloss. The clicking was excellent as there isn’t a single crease on the quarters. Completely glassy and smooth. There is light creasing on the vamp, but alongside some very nice rolls. Break in was minimal, as I found them extremely comfortable from the very beginning. They also only need one conditioning about half way through.
I found the last very comfortable. It has ample arch support, but with my high arches I could always use some more. And while looking very sleek, the last also had enough room for what I call my “world’s biggest” instep and fairly wide foot. And unlike most footwear I’ve ever had, this last had the perfect amount of roominess in the toe box. While chukkas have limited lacing and I always find them to have some heel slip, the 1942 Last had a fairly grippy heel. Worked well with thin dress socks and thick boot socks. All in all, an excellent last.
Excellent clicking. As mentioned, no creasing in the quarters. Construction was solid. Stitching held, lining only go creamier with time, hardware all good. Nice, firm heel counter, too. I was luck enough to get these as a prototype from Oldspeed MFG, and I think Dave knocked the pattern out of the park. Great curves that compliment the 1942 Last. It’s the perfect mix of work boot construction but with a sleek pattern and last to hit the perfect work-to-office design that makes chukkas so versatile
I got so many compliments on the raw cord full sole. The black and gray were a great pairing with the avocado color and I surprised how well this help up as the leather browned. There’s plenty of miles left of the sole, which is rare for me and my heavy stepping. They were comfortable on hard concrete as they were mucking through cold mud. Happy to report I didn’t slip or fall once in these boots.
I am actually shocked how much life these heels still have. I have a fair amount of pronation and usually heels are half gone after six months, but not with these. They were grippy, and again, stylishly paired with the leather. I also have a heel forward step, and these make the most satisfying click on hard surfaces.
Would highly recommend these. Easily my most favorite boots I’ve ever owned. And the most comfortable. Sad the dome is ending, but luckily, as is the case historically, I think chukkas are a great hot-weather boot. Looking forward to keeping these going through the summer.
