Wickett & Craig Olive Traditional Harness is a vegetable-tanned leather produced in one of nine standard colors offered for Traditional Harness by Wickett & Craig. The olive green leather features the distinctive glossy finish and marbled appearance characteristic of the Traditional Harness line, achieved through hot stuffing and jack glazing processes. The leather is manufactured at Wickett & Craig's facility in Curwensville, Pennsylvania, where the company has operated since 1989.
Olive Traditional Harness is available in weights ranging from 2-3 oz. to 13-15 oz., making it suitable for both heavy equestrian applications and lighter leather goods when split to appropriate weights. The leather is offered in three grade levels (Standard, Utility, and Special) to accommodate different quality requirements and applications.
Olive Traditional Harness exhibits the glossier top grain surface characteristic of all Traditional Harness leathers, distinguishing it from the more matte finish of English Bridle leather. The leather shows natural marbling with light and dark olive tones distributed across the hide, a result of the jack glazing process that brings oils to the surface while preserving the natural grain.
The back side is refinished in the olive color using gum paste, creating a waxy and smooth texture. This back refinishing is consistent across all Traditional Harness colors and contributes to the leather's working characteristics. The leather maintains the firm temper and natural grain preservation found throughout the Traditional Harness product line.
Olive sides are available in specific weight ranges: 2.5-3 oz. (1.0-1.2mm), 3.5-4 oz. (1.4-1.6mm), 4.5-5 oz. (1.8-2.0mm), 5.5-6 oz. (2.2-2.4mm), and 9-11 oz. (3.6-4.4mm). Average side dimensions measure 24 square feet, consistent with other Traditional Harness colors.
The leather is offered in #1 and #2 grades (Standard and Utility), representing the highest quality levels with minimal imperfections. A Special grade is also available for applications requiring the highest quality standards. Custom splitting services allow customers to achieve specific thickness requirements beyond the standard weight offerings.
Olive Traditional Harness serves the same range of applications as other Traditional Harness colors, including equestrian gear such as bridles, saddles, and straps. When split to lower weights, the leather is suitable for leather goods including wallets, bags, belts, footwear, and high-end accessories. The olive color provides a distinctive alternative to the more common brown tones while maintaining the performance characteristics expected from vegetable-tanned Traditional Harness leather.
