About

The Wabash Engineer Boots are engineer boots manufactured by John Lofgren Bootmaker. Designated as model LK-003, the boots feature Horween Chromexcel leather construction and are handmade in Japan using traditional Goodyear welt construction methods. Built on the John Lofgren 110 last, the boots are designed to replicate the silhouette of 1950s engineer boots based on vintage examples from John Lofgren's personal archive.

The boots retail for $1,155.00 and are available in multiple Horween Chromexcel colorways including black, natural, and burgundy. Each pair requires extensive development involving pattern adjustments and sample builds to achieve the brand's manufacturing standards. The construction incorporates materials sourced from the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom, including USA-made storm welts, Japanese steel shanks, and British Goodyear welting techniques.

Construction and Materials

Upper Construction

The Wabash Engineer Boots utilize Horween Chromexcel leather for the uppers. Natural Chromexcel leather is undyed and develops patina through wear, darkening from its initial light tan color. The black colorway uses tea-core Chromexcel leather that reveals brown interior coloring as the surface wears. Individual leather panels may display different initial hues that eventually develop uniform patina over time.

The leather construction requires a break-in period of several weeks before the material softens and conforms to the wearer's foot. During the initial wear period, the Chromexcel leather starts stiff but gradually becomes more pliable with continued use.

Sole and Welt Construction

The boots employ Goodyear welt construction using USA-made storm welts. This construction method allows for sole replacement and provides water resistance through the storm welt design. The welting process involves multiple stitching operations with heavy single, double, and triple stitched sewing throughout the construction.

The sole construction incorporates USA-made Vibram 705 half soles paired with Vibram 700 heels. British Goodyear welting techniques are utilized in the manufacturing process, combining international construction methods. Japanese-made steel shanks provide arch support and structural integrity within the sole construction.

Hardware and Finishing

Metal components include brass-coated steel buckles manufactured in Tokyo. The boots feature Japanese-made steel shanks for arch support and an embossed padded leather heel pad for comfort. The buckle hardware provides the traditional engineer boot aesthetic while maintaining functional durability.

Design Development

The Wabash Engineer Boots development process involved extensive examination of vintage engineer boots from John Lofgren's personal collection. The design team conducted multiple pattern adjustments and sample builds to achieve the desired 1950s silhouette. The custom-made last was specifically designed to eliminate the toe bump common in modern boots while maintaining the tapered shape characteristic of mid-century engineer boot design.

The 110 last provides the foundation for the boot's shape, creating what the manufacturer describes as a 1950s silhouette with no toe bump and a tapered appearance. This last is shared with other John Lofgren engineer boot models and creates consistency across the product line.

Specifications

Measurements and Sizing

The boots measure approximately 12.5 inches in total height with a 10.75-inch shaft height. The heel construction adds 1.75 inches through a stacked woodsman heel design. Available sizing ranges from US size 6D to 12D in medium width, with size conversions provided for Japanese, UK, and European sizing systems.

Sizing recommendations indicate choosing 0.5 size smaller than Brannock device measurements. The boots fit the same as Red Wing Iron Ranger boots or Alden Barrie last sizing, while measuring 0.5 size larger than Viberg 2030 last sizing. The 110 last accommodates D/medium width feet and provides a shapely silhouette with slim waist and rounded toe.

Manufacturing Process

Production takes place entirely in Japan using what the manufacturer characterizes as the highest manufacturing standards. The construction philosophy incorporates materials sourced exclusively from the United States, Japan, Italy, France, and England. The manufacturing process adheres to traditional Japanese craftsmanship principles while incorporating international material sourcing.

Each pair undergoes multiple quality control steps during production, with Japanese craftspeople specializing in specific production phases. The manufacturing approach emphasizes attention to detail and adherence to traditional construction methods adapted for contemporary use.

Care and Maintenance

Basic maintenance involves brushing off accumulated dirt and wiping the leather with a damp cloth when necessary. Leather conditioning requires application of natural leather conditioner as needed to maintain the Chromexcel leather's flexibility and appearance. The manufacturer recommends avoiding harsh chemicals or excessive moisture exposure during care routines.

The Chromexcel leather responds well to regular conditioning but does not require frequent treatment. Over-conditioning can saturate the leather and affect its natural aging characteristics. Regular brushing helps maintain the leather's surface texture and removes surface debris.

Availability and Packaging

The boots are available through authorized retailers and ship from the United Kingdom for international distribution. Each pair includes Japanese-made John Lofgren Bootmaker boxes and protective dust bags for storage and transport. Some colorway variants may require pre-ordering with extended delivery timelines due to production scheduling.

Retail availability varies by colorway, with certain combinations experiencing periodic stock shortages due to production capacity limitations. The manufacturing process constrains production volume, leading to seasonal availability for specific leather and color combinations.
