Haven’t started breaking these in yet—saving them for the upcoming Patina Thunderdome! They’re still basically fresh out of the box, so no real wear to report, but handling and initial try-ons have been positive. Planning to rotate them hard as soon as the season starts.
The Horween Natural Chromexcel Roughout (“reverse”) looks and feels fantastic. The nap is nice—not super shaggy, more of a tight, robust texture. The color is a little darker than I expected (more beige than white), but I actually prefer this. Smells great, exactly as you’d hope from Horween. From all the Thunderdome photos, I’m excited to see how these develop patina over time.
I went with size 9D/42 on the US-NAV last (same as my Red Wing IRs and Truman Formal last). Fit feels true to size—good heel lock, enough room for thicker socks in winter, and the included insoles probably aren’t needed for me. This is my first unstructured toe box and I’m looking forward to seeing the flex and shape mold to my foot. Very comfortable out of the box.
Overall quality looks excellent—leather, soles, and components all feel top tier. The classic round toe is exactly what I wanted, stitchdown construction is solid, gusseted tongue is a nice touch for water resistance. The stitching is a bit uneven in spots, but nothing critical (and honestly, I doubt anyone but me will notice). Sizing support and communication from BLKBRD were responsive and helpful. Only downside: having to manually send extra shipping for two pairs—would be nice if this was automatic in checkout.
At 29,900 INR (~$299 USD, ~249 EUR), these are significantly cheaper than US boots of similar quality I can buy locally (for reference, ~150 CHF less than Red Wing IRs). Materials, build, and overall experience make them a great value in my opinion. Super happy with these so far, both in hand and on foot. The leather and shape are exactly what I wanted for an everyday, character-building boot. Can’t wait to see how the unstructured toe and natural roughout evolve once put through some real wear.
