About

Alden Shoe Company is a premium American footwear manufacturer founded in 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and use of Horween shell cordovan leather, Alden represents the pinnacle of American shoemaking tradition. The company has built its reputation on creating premium dress shoes and boots using traditional construction methods that ensure both quality and longevity.

Alden's commitment to traditional craftsmanship, combined with their exclusive partnerships with premium tanneries like Horween Leather Company, has established them as a leading manufacturer of high-end footwear favored by discerning customers worldwide.

History and Development

Alden Shoe Company was founded in 1884 by Charles H. Alden in Middleborough, Massachusetts, where the company continues to operate today. The company began as a small operation focused on creating high-quality footwear for the local New England market but quickly gained recognition for its superior craftsmanship and attention to detail.

During the early 20th century, Alden developed its signature relationship with Horween Leather Company of Chicago, becoming one of the primary manufacturers to specialize in shell cordovan leather footwear. This partnership allowed Alden to create shoes using one of the world's most prized leather materials, setting them apart from other manufacturers.

The company gained significant cultural recognition when their boots were worn by Harrison Ford in the Indiana Jones film series, specifically the "Indy Boot" which became an iconic piece of both cinema and footwear history. This exposure introduced Alden to a broader audience while maintaining their reputation for quality and authenticity.

Design and Construction

Alden shoes and boots are built using traditional Goodyear welt construction, which provides exceptional durability and allows for resoling throughout the shoe's lifetime. The company employs time-tested construction methods that have been refined over more than a century of operation.

Construction Features:

  • Goodyear Welt Construction: Hand-sewn welt allows for multiple resoles and provides water resistance

  • Premium Leather Selection: Careful sourcing of full-grain leathers from top-tier tanneries

  • Traditional Last Design: Classic American shoe shapes that provide both comfort and elegant proportions

  • Quality Hardware: Brass eyelets and traditional lacing systems built to withstand decades of use

  • Leather Sole Construction: Hand-finished leather soles with appropriate heel construction for each model

  • Each pair is handcrafted by skilled artisans in Alden's Massachusetts factory, where traditional techniques are passed down through generations of craftspeople.

    Materials and Leather Options

Alden is perhaps best known for its extensive use of Horween shell cordovan, a premium leather made from horsehide that develops a unique patina over time. The company offers the widest selection of shell cordovan colors available from any manufacturer.

    Shell Cordovan Colors:

  • Color 8: Deep burgundy, Alden's signature and most popular shell cordovan shade

  • Black: Classic formal black shell cordovan for dress applications

  • Color 4: Rich brown with slight red undertones

  • Color 2: Dark brown approaching black

  • Color 6: Medium brown with golden undertones

  • Whiskey: Light honey-colored shell cordovan in limited production

  • Ravello: Reddish-brown shade available in special releases

  • Additional Premium Leathers:

  • Chromexcel: Full-grain leather from Horween with excellent aging characteristics

  • Calfskin: High-grade European calfskin for dress shoes

  • Suede: Premium suede in various colors for casual applications

  • Alpine Grain: Textured leather for more casual footwear styles

  • All leathers used by Alden are carefully selected for their quality, character, and aging potential, ensuring that each pair of shoes develops its own unique patina over years of wear.

    Sizing and Fit

Alden shoes are built on traditional American lasts that have been developed and refined over decades. The company uses several different lasts depending on the specific model and intended fit characteristics.

    Popular Lasts:

  • Barrie Last: Alden's most popular last, offering a generous fit with a rounded toe

  • Modified Last: Slightly more tapered than Barrie with a refined appearance

  • Aberdeen Last: Sleeker profile suitable for dress shoes and formal occasions

  • Trubalance Last: Roomier last designed for maximum comfort in work boots

  • Plaza Last: Narrow last for elegant dress shoes requiring a precise fit

  • Sizing Guidelines:

  • General Rule: Size down 0.5-1.0 sizes from athletic shoe sizing

  • Width Options: Available in various widths from C to EEE depending on model

  • Professional Fitting: Recommended through authorized Alden dealers

  • Break-in Period: Allow 80-100 hours of wear for full comfort development

  • Due to the traditional construction and premium materials, Alden shoes require a proper break-in period during which the leather will conform to the wearer's foot shape.

  • By Way2Jeff • April 6, 2025"Ah, suede. The leather that Seinfeld doomed to an eternity of prissing and pampering. Spray this, avoid that. Nobody believes in you, suede. Well, I do. At least, I do now. I thought a light colored suede would be doming on easy mode. Milkshake indys, snuff bucks, tan boondockers. Alas, good suede is good leather: it takes a beating, it yearns to live, and it’s master of its domain. So these are my Alden fauxdockers at the end of the ‘25 Dome. I grew to like this pair more and more as I wore them—they started out tight but I eventually found the right sock combo for them. They’re resilient, and didn’t show anywhere near as much wear as I expected. Beware the Ides of Suede. I love that Brogue/Alden made this boondocker-inspired boot. Sure, it ain’t a REAL docker, but most people don’t wax their heritage boondockers anyhow. As someone else once said: I’m not hitting the beaches of Normandy, I’m just trying to look good getting coffee. And it was the 379x last—the best Alden last you’ve never worn. Pardon the trope, but it’s huge in Japan. Tight heel, snug waist, medium vamp, moderate arch, good round toe. It’s everything you want in a boot that actually fits. Brogue are saints for making a dozen of these models every year. Long live the 379x! Alden is still my favorite shoemaker. I think the recent knocks on them are largely BS and/or borne of ignorance. But on top of their stalwarts, this pair—and many others—show what Alden, the old cur, and a bold young stockist like Brogue can do together...."Read the full review
