The leather is darker brown in spots while retaining a bit of Carmel coloring which I love. There was little to no break in. These boots were truly comfortable from day 1 unlike my experience with red wing and Truman. I would brush the boots after every wear and put in shoe trees at night. It conformed to my feet quickly which helped minimize the initial heel slip and evolved to a beautiful warmer brown with time. It seemed to need minimal care aside from consistent brushing. I probably worn these pair 5 days a week or so and tried to get in a good brushing session every 3 wears or so. One good conditioning with vsc in about December after they got really wet seemed to be all they needed aside from a couple little dabs of conditioner on a couple of occasions to brush out scuffs...."Read the full review

I brush almost daily, before each wear and have only conditioned lightly with neatsfoot oil. Its no wonder that CXL is a popular choice among bootmakers. Though the British Tan CXL has held its color pretty well, you can see the teacore peeking through in high use areas like the counter cover and some caramelization on the toe box...."Read the full review
