Got the boondocker itch and decided to get an MTO from Fortis for all purpose wear. Main motivation was to try out waxed roughout for durability and style.
Sany from Fortis shared an instructional on how to measure my feet across: length, width, ball width, in step, long heel and ankle. Not sure if any last modifications was done or if it was a straight match.
The initial order was straightforward as I had all the specs I wanted down. DMed Fortis on IG and they were very responsive to my questions. However, after that - there were several delays with constant chasing post-deadline with no responses. Was initially quoted 6-8 weeks but order took 12 weeks. Pretty short as compared to the other horror stories I’ve read on the discord. It wasn’t the delays that bothered me but the lack of responses and expectation management. At some point I felt ghosted and had to reach out via WhatsApp, which got me a fast response since I guess they assumed it was a new customer. This actually isn’t a hard thing to solve. Quote timelines accurately and respond accordingly if there are unfortunate delays. When the boots finally arrived, I was relieved and very happy with the presentation, great box with boot bags and many laces.
Pushed these to the limit through office concrete, dirt roads, beach sand, jungle terrain, river wading, soil and mud
The leather has aged immaculately, with every scuff and bend revealing the rough nep and ‘50 shades of brown’. Break in was a little tough which took around ~2 weeks of daily wear before they started to give. The leather is thick and durable. After the initial few coats of wax (Saphir Neutral 1925 Creme), the only care I gave it was regular brushing and cleaning with a wet rag when they got soiled/water logged. Did sand, re-dye and polish the sole edges about halfway through as they were pretty scuffed.
The last is very forgiving in the forefoot with plenty of room for toe-splay. In step was rather snug for me which I liked as it gave a feeling of security and support. Folks with higher in steps like mine may feel a little bit sore in the first weeks. Heel felt perfect with no slippage. Arch support was present but not over-powering at the start. After awhile, the arch did collapse a little and was less ‘noticeable’
Construction is solid and clean, not a stitch out of place with one exception, some of the finishing stitches on the quarters’ box stitching came loose after the first few wears. Cut and burnt the tag ends down. Veldtschoen construction gave strong water resistance. Most of the time water came in through the uppers leather after prolonged periods of rain/being submerged. Never felt any seepage through the insoles. Clicking was good for rough out, wonderful rolls at the ball and ankle.
Great traction and durability, with plenty of life left after the hard 7 months they’ve seen. A couple of the yellow plugs did come off though. They’re pretty hard too which takes some getting used to.
Great traction and durability, feels a slight bit more squishy than a Vibram 430, which is a plus in terms of comfort!
I’ve really come to love these boots as they’re super hardy and surprisingly versatile - pairing beautifully with jeans, chinos, fatigues and even hiking cargo pants. The ordering process was subpar though, with expected delays and constant chasing with no responses. I guess with Fortis that has become expected sadly. But definitely worth the price and the wait after you’ve prepared yourself mentally.
