I wore my merchants as regularly as I could. On dog walks, errands, and going out with my wife. I work from home so they didn't see too much heavy use while I was in NY. I did however take them with me to the 2025 Bootcamp, which was part of a 2 week trip (first time ever my wife and I took a 2 week vacation). During that trip I purposefully only brought two pairs of shoes with my merchants being one of them. I wore them the entire time I was in Chicago and even got some hiking done with them during the second leg of our trip in colorado.

S.B. Foot Ebony Harness
The ebony harness leather aged gracefully, taking on a shine on the well worn areas. It picks up scuffs and scratches easily but just as easily can be brushed out. Break in was a breeze.

I have a seriously hard time sizing high quality footwear. The 8 last fits incredibly well with an unstructured toe. It's a tad roomy width wide, but nothing a thicker sock can't fix.

I feel as if the merchants were made to a slightly higher degree of finishing than the more common and standard heritage models.

Grip is good. Sole is very flexible. Feels like a sturdy dessert boot more than a boot boot. Durable and long lasting from what I can see.

It was great to see these age. I typically stick to black boots. This was my first well worn brown leather boot.

The Vibram mini lug sole with no slip features was very helpful. I also moved vacuum pumps to my shop for maintenance. I got my Red Wing 1907s resoled by Steve at Bedo’s Leatherworks (new welt, midsole, and outsole) in July 2025. Steve did an absolutely FANTASTIC job. He really breathed new life into them. July was also the same month my daughter was born. After i got my boots back from Steve, I tested them out for a bit and put them on the shelf, since I was going to be staying in the house helping the wife raise our newborn. I wasn’t planning on Doming this year, but the pre-worn category was announced a few months later, and I knew my boots were the perfect “fit” for the category.
I wore these for EVERYTHING. Most notably, at the Honolulu Marathon’s 10k portion where wife and I speed-walked our baby in her stroller through downtown honolulu. These boots helped keep my dogs from barking during the 10k and our trip to Japan, and they kept my feet dry while chopping through armored snow (what happened on the East Coast was weird).They’re surprisingly great beach boots, handling sand sprays with ease.
