Worn these on construction sites ankle deep in mud and even up on my roof blowing leaves off the house, and they take the abuse, clean up easy, and keep going.
Interesting leather. I expected it to need a lot of care, maybe dry out or require constant attention, but it’s been the opposite. Other than occasionally hitting the sole edges with some conditioner, I’ve just wiped them down with a damp cloth and brushed them hard. That’s been more than enough to keep them looking good. Break-in was no joke. The double midsole was pretty stiff at first, but once it gave in, it’s been really comfortable. Same with the leather, this horsehide starts out stiff and just rolls instead of creasing. What stands out most is how different each panel looks. Every section of the boot ages on its own. A lot of natural leathers end up going that same dark orange, but these have kept a ton of variation. I would have to think this is due to no conditioning.
Glad Iron Heart Germany questioned my sizing. Normally I go true to size in a D on something like a Mister Lou or Boss, but on this one, even in a D, you really want to go a half size down, similar to how you would size a Mister Lou in an E. Even prior to break in heel slip was pretty minimal, wearing an over the calf midweight cushion DT sock. the perfect fit for this boot with my feet. I would imagine somebody with less volume on would could adjust the sock thickness up or the opposite could adjust it down. No hotspots or uncomfortable areas just feet getting used to the double midsole, and the leather breaking within the first week or so really helped with overall comfort. The 91W last has a longer, more tapered almond-shaped toe. Someone with a high-volume, square forefoot will probably struggle with it or need to size up. For me, it fits similar to an E in the Mister Lou, maybe even a touch wider.
Couldn’t be happier with the craftsmanship. The stitching is as good as it gets for PNW, and the leather selection across the panels is spot on. Really no creasing at all, just rolling like shell. The mix of the two leathers choice of hardware color, Everything just spot on perfect.
Super durable, probably not the slowest wearing of all soles, but still works as intended
Pretty much worked as expected. Initial heel wear was pretty quick, then it slowed down. That’s probably just my gait, but once it hit that point it stayed pretty consistent.
These have been exactly what I was hoping for. I’ve had them on job sites, in mud, up on the roof blowing leaves, not babying them at all. They just take it and keep going. The double midsole was stiff at first but broke in right, and now they’re comfortable enough to wear all day without thinking about it. The leather started out firm but never felt fragile, and it’s held up better than I expected with basically no maintenance. Wipe them down, brush them, done. What I keep noticing is how the whole boot doesn’t age the same. Each panel is doing its own thing, nothing forced, nothing uniform. They’ve got that worn in look without looking beat up. Really no creasing, just that slow roll you usually only see with shell. For something I’ve put through real work, they still clean up better than they should. That balance between tough and good looking is hard to get right, and these nailed it. It wasn’t the most cost effective work boot, but with how it’s performed and how good it looks, it’s hard to say the cost really matters.
