Worn these while hiking, camping, traveling, going to the office, going to the beach, in rain, in snow, on the plane, on the train, on hot coals. Kept my feet dry and protected through it all. Everywhere except the house.
Held up incredibly well to the abuse. Little to no damage even after a slip into a campfire. Brushed and conditioned monthly with Obenauf's resulting in a darker brown tone with red undertones.
I had a pair of Russell Moccasin boots that I used as a reference when choosing a size in the 77 last. Big mistake. 77 last is far more narrow and I wish I went up a size in width to accommodate my toes.
Premium materials, the overlap stitch, and a time-consuming wet lasting process results in a shoe that performs in the outdoors. Even the shearling interior holds up with no bare spots in the typical locations (heel and toes). Don't expect perfection and symmetry from Russell, but expect a shoe/boot that is durable and reliable.
Quiet. Silent. You can absolutely sneak up on people and animals. However walking on concrete and asphalt will take some time for your feet to acclimate to. The sole is far more durable than you would expect.
I bought this to test Russell Moccasin's claims that this was not a house slipper, that this same leather outsole construction was used on boots that hiked over a thousand miles. And also because I wanted a shearling-lined shoe to replace my worn out LL Bean slippers. I can say now without a doubt that this is a proper outdoor shoe. Just buy the right size.
