Been buying boots on shopgoodwill.com for months, kept telling myself I was going to take a break from buying boots. Just found the NOS irish setters, was checking the shipping date and saw these on "you might like this", was like "ok just one more pair". Work as a carpenter and need a wedge sole boot, was looking at the Frank's Ranier or White's C-350 for higher arch support, then saw these to bid on and jumped on it.
I went with the same size as my Redwing 8" moc toes and they fit great.
Nail biting, I've gotten a good tactic down for bidding online though. Really lucky just to see it pop up at the right time.
I work for myself doing carpentry work and live on a farm. So they've been worked hard, going up and down ladders, having debris fall on them on demo days, kicking dirt in holes doing fencing, even chasing escaped cows across the yard lol
It changes frequently, I love the variety of patina it's shown. They've taken a lot of abuse without damaging the leather like it would others. I had barbwire hit without leaving a scratch. The break in process was pretty brutal for me. I took out the ortholite insoles and added Nick's veg tan ones. The uppers were stiff to where I had to add neatsfoot oil from the inside before I wore. The pair I got was made in 2023, might have something to do with it. I'm also a lighter weight guy. They've just now felt like they're broke in and I still need to add more neatsfoot oil in spots. I subject them to materials that drys leather out though like concrete and plaster dust. I brush off with a horsehair brush before every wear and wipe down the insides every so often.
The sizing and fit is great for me. I really love to amount of toe splay room I have in these boots. I'm a 13C on my right foot and 12.5C/D on my left foot. Wearing these in 13D with thicker socks. I have moderately high arches with skinny ankles and heels, with toes wider than the balls of my feet. The uppers hold the side of my arch well. Took me a while to sink into the leather and feel the footbed on my arch.
It's top notch. Made extremely durable, I've had a ton of things fall on my toe and not feel it, only when a log rolled on it did I feel anything through the leather toe. Only thing I would change is an eyelet at the top instead of a speed hook, locks in better and easier to adjust a different tightness. The break in on the 8" I'm sure is easier, the collar on the 6" took a while to break. The White's bite I suppose.
Good, worn down more than I would of expected. It's a little thicker than I'm used to. When I resole, I may add a thinner version with a kletterlift. On a 6", can feel bottom heavy.
With my work, a wedge sole is where it's at. All my work boots are wedge soles.
It should be known I cycled through two other pairs of boots for work. These, Redwing vintage 877's, and new 10877's. I wore these on my heaviest duty work days. They held up great and protected my feet while offering support that allowed me to keep going. I would definitely recommend for those that need a boot that will take whatever you throw at it. They are heavy and take a while to break in, not everyone needs this much boot but for those that do, these fit the bill.
