7 and 7.5D were comfortable, decided to go for snugger size because CXL is softer and I tried on with thick socks
Standard & Strange
I was looking for a black boot with unstructured toe, hoping for some good creases, rolls, and collapse. I also knew fit and comfort would make or break whether I’d wear it enough to get to that point. Standard & Strange Berkeley had the Lofgren El Capitan in stock. Pricey, but I had determined to get it if it fit. I was hoping to try on a few others to check lasts but the other boots didn’t interest me.
Luckily S&S had the range in sizes in stock. I start with 8 (Brannock size, clearly too large just looking at them), then 7.5, then 7. I spent some time with them in store debating between 7 and 7.5. The 7.5 footbed felt most natural, but turned out was just a hair too roomy everywhere else The 7 felt more snug all around. Toebox shape worked well with no pressure spots. Most importantly the vamp volume was spot on- snug with socks, comfortable. Brannock width is a C/D.
In person, full size range at Standard & Strange
One day of walking around town on paved surfaces. The Vibram sole gives just enough impact absorption compared to an old pair of Frye boots with Oilite “cork” soles that are super rigid. The vamp is just starting to crease. I’m still babying it, not flexing it too much.
Initial impressions: Chromexcel is surprisingly breathable, and medium-soft. It’s both buttery and thick and substantial. The initial creases are fine grained. I was hoping for a bit more rolls, but we’ll see how this evolves.
7D was the right size choice, full step down from Brannock. I have low volume feet, skinny side of D width, ultra skinny ankles, and a medium arch. The most noticeable break in discomfort is from the collar around the ankles. The collar is rolled so there’s a bit of stiffness. It’s not too bad for a few hours of walking. The top lacing just fully closed around my skinny ankles: I’m going to try a kiltie to help here and get some lace pressure around the ankle. Toe shape and volume felt good. I could use a little bit more cup around the heel, but I don’t expect this to be a problem. I’m also considering a partial insole to lift the heel, give a little arch support (if the sole arch felt like Bikenstocks I’d be in heaven) and fill in some instep volume.
